Mark Thawley
Design Associate, Mark Thawley gained a deep
appreciation for traditional golf course architecture during
his travels to Scotland and England to study several of the
classic links and heathland courses while completing his Masters
of Landscape Architecture at the University of Arizona.
His thesis, “Evaluating Established Golf
Courses-Restoration, Renovation, and Redesign,” focused
on the importance of restoring the old-fashioned character
and unique design features found on many of the early American
courses.
Before joining Kyle Phillips Golf Course Design
in 2000, Mark gained hands on construction and design experience
through projects such as The Gallery Golf Club (Tucson, AZ),
Quit-Qui-Oc Golf Club (Elkhart Lake, WI), and The Kingsley
Club (Kingsley, MI).

Dan Powell
For the past 20 years, Dan has been a vital part of more than 45 world class golf courses in nine different countries. The combination of his experience in the golf course construction industry, as well as his understanding of golf course design, provides a unique level of expertise to our clients, including preconstruction programs, budgets, and complete project management.
In 1988, Dan immigrated to the US directly from the University of Calgary, where he majored in Economics. He went to work for Greenscape, Ltd., the construction company of Robert Trent Jones II, where he worked as a shaper on several US and International projects. It was here, while working at the Four Seasons Resort on Nevis Island, that he first met Kyle Phillips. After a stint with the design and project management company New Asia Golf international, Dan returned to North America to work for Wadsworth Golf, the largest golf course contractor in the USA. He spent 13 years with Wadsworth, where, as manager of the Pacific Division in Northern California, he was responsible for overseeing multiple golf course construction projects ranging from 20-35 million dollars per year.
